PHILOSPHY
Nihilism argues that life lacks any inherent meaning, morality, or value. It challenges religious, moral, and social norms, asserting that these constructs are human-made and lack universal authority. While often associated with despair and existentialism, some see nihilism as liberating, or a “blank slate” to create one’s values. That being said, nihilists don't tend to be that optimistic.
To put it simply, life is pointless with no meaning but this allows us to create our own.
FOUNDER
Friedrich Nietzsche is often considered the founder of nihilism, though he critiqued passive nihilism, proposing the concept of the “Übermensch” which translates directly to “overman” as a way to overcome it with the concept of the ideal future.
MAJOR WORKS
The Will to Power by Nietzsche and Notes from Underground by Fyodor Doestoevsky.
